Why Are Most Artists Liberal?

January 10th, 2011 | By admin

As seen on Big Hollywood

Reality demonstrates that people act on their basest needs. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs says that basic needs are things like food, shelter, safety, and security. If one progresses up the scale, needs like love, belonging, esteem, and respect become important.

Hollywood is a competitive place to live and work. People who live and work there know that it might be the most competitive place to live in the entire world. The drive to succeed, to find an edge that propels you to the next level can be very compelling for those who are weak. Of those who crave the sort of attention that might compel them into the snake pit that is Hollywood, psychologists could agree that components in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs are lacking in key areas such as confidence, friendship, and even morality. All of these mid-level needs should be met for healthy development of creativity, intellect, problem solving, and other high-level needs. Maslow might reason that in the desperate setting of Hollywood, the underdevelopment of needs like morality, confidence, respect of self and from others might lead to the malformative finding of one’s self at the top of the triangle, with many of the more basic needs still lacking. In Abraham Maslow’s terms, this is a recipe for disaster of philosophical incorporation.

Other factors contribute to misintegration of philosophical synthesis, as well.

Artists are often dependent on state funding. This may elicit a reactionary response whereby an artist who might otherwise be conservative is immediately comfortable with the idea of government finance and control in order to meet her basic needs as enumerated in the physiological component of Maslow’s needs (food, water, sex, sleep, survival).

Artists know that success is often found in pushing boundaries. Art is usually only cutting edge once, and genres tend to have a shelf life. There is only one O’Keefe, only one Eastwood, only one Bach. Those genres, recomposed for today, would not have the impact because they already did. The easiest way to create a niche is to push a boundary (for example, Ke$ha, Katie Perry, Madonna). Preserving tradition often results in preserving the status quo, and taking that to a level of marketable creativity is only for the artistic genius (It’s a Wonderful Life; The Passion; The Blind Side; Amazing Grace). The reality is that not all artists are geniuses. Therefore, they will be tempted to crutch on breaking norms to accomplish notoriety, rather than rely on genius they don’t have, or hope to have.

Erich Fromm said, “If I am what I have, and I lose what I have, who am I?” His ominous warning told a tale of the reality of someone who does not properly and systematically actualize.

Creativity is usually born of deep emotional angst. In order to tap into the deepest of creative ability, it is often necessary to dwell on emotions others have the convenience of glossing over. We are all sad when we experience the death of a pet. The creator of King Kong had to not only experience the death of an animal, he had to think of every complexity, and focus in depth on the emotional trauma in order to invite his audience to experience it on film. While we all at some point are witness to the death of an animal, the writers and producers of King Kong had to delve into every painful portion of those experiences, contemplate it, ruminate on it, and experiment with it in order to assure that his audience would live the most compelling parts of that loss in the movie. The result of all this is that the artist dwells in the realm of emotion. While all of us experience emotion, the rest of us have the luxury of moving on. Not the artist. He has to dissect it, magnify it, and live it for months on end. Then, like some cruel joke, the artist is often rewarded for his attention to detail in describing for all of us the precise most painful components of pain, loss, grief, insecurity, and other emotional parts. Thus, the artist is conditioned in a Pavlovian way to act based on emotion. It would seem natural that he would then transpose that action on other elements of his life, including his marriage, his friendships, and his politics.

Artists are not paid for tapping into the power of rationale, but rather, the power of emotion. Therefore, they have no real reason to exercise or even acknowledge the rational argument of a situation. Much of art is fantasy to begin with, for example, one would not appreciate the movie King Kong if the artist explained how a giant gorilla couldn’t really do what his movie depicted. The Harry Potter films would flop, Poe would be a side note, Monet would have sunk right into his pond, and the Twilight would be bankrupt. When an artist takes a look at how to “fix” a social or economic problem, it shouldn’t surprise us that they are looking for heroes and villains, for victims and perpetrators, and for bigger than life fantasies that aren’t based in reality (and therefore won’t work).

Artists are not trained to delve into the gray. They are trained to define the absolutes such as living, dying, good, bad, heaven, and hell in ways that most of us never really have to face. Therefore, when it comes time for an artist to consider possibilities, and rational conclusion in areas like politics that they don’t know, their mind immediately goes to the dramatic—the victim, the hero; the winner, the loser; the angel, the demon.

To further complicate matters, man has an innate need for God, or religion. Conservatives argue that such needs are God breathed, but liberals have to try to push those needs aside. Artists, who tend to be deeply emotional, sociologically less adept, and psychologically needier than the basic population, arguably have a deeper need for God than any other professional population. Liberalism, in it’s cult-like compulsion toward legalistically defined behavior as dictated by leaders (bankers, producers, dealers, funders) in Hollywood, and one that provides a sort of moral promise of victory, can be very alluring. This allure meets the higher level Maslovian esteem needs that the artist may not be prepared for if he has not met the lower level needs, as he has not in many cases. Thus, liberalism becomes a pseudo religion whereby answers to other unmet Maslovian needs promise to be met somehow; some way. As the expectation continues to exceed the outcome, the artist may grow weary of their religion of “Liberalism,” and make the switch! This may explain why many artists become conservatives

This predisposition toward emotionality and validation would make the most sound minded, conservative-leaning artist somewhat reactionary. The combination of gratification for emotional response to stimulus, and the fact that most artists deal in a fictional depiction of absolutes would naturally lead to a skewed perception of how people really work. Artists are not rewarded for reality. They are rewarded most often for their dramatic, condensed representation of what reality could be.

So the question becomes then—why do artists feel compelled or qualified to delve into the political when they have no training for it at all, and even their life experience lacks credentials necessary to relate to real Americans who don’t live in Hollywood? Should they not simply exclude themselves, much like a judge does when she knows she has conflicting experience that might impede her rational judgment in a case? Well, no, because we believe in freedom under the US Constitution—even under the knowledge that freedom could result in loss of liberties for having them.

In Frontpagemag.com, John J. Ray has a theory about fame and ego that is too good to paraphrase:

My basic proposal, then, is that most (but not all) Leftists/liberals are motivated by strong ego needs — needs for power, attention, praise and fame. And in the USA and other developed countries they satisfy this need by advocating large changes in the society around them — thus drawing attention to themselves and hopefully causing themselves to be seen as wise, innovative, caring etc. Rightists by contrast have no need either for change or its opposite and may oppose change if they see it as destructive or favour change if they see it as constructive.

We will see below why one of the most consistent themes to emerge from the Leftist’s love of change is the claimed need for “equality”. And the belief in “equality” also tends to lead to support for such things as redistribution of wealth generally, heavily “progressive” income taxes, inheritance taxes, foreign aid, feminism, gay rights and socialized medicine. Again for reasons explored below, Leftists also tend to oppose religion and the churches and this in turn tends to mean that they favour abortion and oppose or obstruct religious schooling in various ways. So let us now briefly look at some of these characteristic Leftist/liberal themes to see how they relate to basic Leftist motives.

And he concludes:

But in all cases, bitter experience has shown that Leftists in power are very dangerous and destructive people. Where their power is effectively unchecked, they generally seem to resort sooner or later to mass murder (as in the case of the French revolutionaries, Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot, Jim Jones and many Communist regimes and movements worldwide) and where they are partially thwarted by strong democratic traditions and institutions, they at least bring about large-scale impoverishment (as in post-independence India and pre-Thatcher Britain).

All people including artists want to believe that their work is meaningful and significant. For artists, this propels their belief that human nature is changeable with proper “education” which thereby gives credence to their work. Thus, to believe in their own meaningful output of work product, they must fancy themselves “educators” capable of changing people in important ways.

If you believe, as I do, and as John J. Ray does, that liberalism is inherently destructive and conservatism, while imperfect, is the far better alternative, then you need to know that my psychological training perceives hope on the horizon, because of the current liberal artists’ dilemma: the liberal artist is marketing today to a glowingly conservative consumer. Conservatives are crying out for family oriented, morally compelling, traditional values that once graced the silver screen and our television sets. The heart of America is sentimental for a turn back to the roots of Hollywood. If the market is demanding enough, it just might result in the artists resorting to Maslow’s Hierarchy to make a living to meet their basic needs, and that might look a lot like the recent mid term elections when we just threw the bastards out and changed the course of history.

Bravo, Hollywood. The best is yet to come.

SHARP REPORT: My Tribute to Dr. Laura

January 3rd, 2011 | By admin

see the original article here with audio

For the last seven years I have been the Technical Director for the Dr. Laura Program. This has been an educational and maturing experience and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with her.

Whether you agree or disagree with Dr. Laura she has a right to her opinion and you have a right to yours. I find it interesting how some people talk about being open minded and tolerant yet they attack with venomous anger those who disagree with them. I am also sick of people accusing her of being a racist because of the incident with a caller in August.

It was frustrating to watch pundits and Al Sharpton ignorantly distort what Dr. Laura said. I know this woman and I can tell you this for certain, she is not a racist. Even though I will not be joining her as she moves to Sirius XM, I love watching her detractors froth with rage because they can no longer threaten her affiliates and sponsors.

Dr. Laura has been a friend and mentor and I want to publically wish her the best as she begins a new chapter in her life. Change is difficult and I must now change as well. I am excited and open to any and all opportunities that will come my way in the coming months.

Thank you for supporting the show and following my career. Radio is my first love and I will continue to host Uncommon Ground and The Sharp Report. Have a blessed and Happy New Year!

Stay Sharp!

Star Power: Palin Takes Hollywood … And the Culture

December 27th, 2010 | By Gina Loudon

The article is featured here at Big Hollywood

The liberal media relentlessly criticizes Sarah Palin for her ubiquitous media appearances from hard news punditry to pop culture appearances. The Fox News analyst is “going Hollywood” with her latest stint in reality TV, attendance at Bristol’s Dancing with the Stars events. Palin is everywhere. More than any other political figure in modern history, the ever-present Palin has shown a phenomenal ability to remain relevant. Her savvy has left her progressives hand-wringing, potential presidential opponents sniping, and everyone else in America abuzz over what she will and should do next.

Sarah Palin

Depending on your point of view, she is either a genius or opportunist. Should a politician go anywhere near reality TV? If you are a crusty, wing tip wearing beltway boy, the answer is obvious. If you are in Hollywood, you are jealously wondering which agent she engaged. If you are in flyover land, you are withholding judgment.

What is clear is that Palin has tapped a connection with “real America” in a Reaganesque manner that makes any politician jealous. She understands the culture, and she knows what it takes to keep ones name at the center of conversations. She engenders just the right amount of criticism to keep her fans rabidly defensive. Her detractors wind up looking like yipping, hysterical Chihuahuas with pink, spiky collars in pathetic attempts to appear menacing. Meanwhile, poli-star wannabe’s from Michael Moore to Meghan McCain are salivating as their pathetic attempts to pedal their way to relevance falls far short of what only comes naturally to Sarah Palin—Poli Super Stardom.

She has it. They want it. They can’t get it. It is that simple.

The “It” is the Hollywood and new media age super stardom that tees up political success. Reagan started the tactic. Schwarzenegger leveraged it before he dropped the baby (California) on its head. But only Sarah Palin has perfected it.

When liberals hate her, conservatives become more intrigued. When they call her names, conservatives jump in the ring to defend her. When they call for her murder, conservatives turn all guns on her protection, her promotion, and yes, her presidency.

This has Hollywood scratching their heads. Who is her agent? How could she do all of this without proper media training? Why no voice coach, they wonder. Surely she needs some polishing that only folks in the business can provide if ever she is to make something of herself.

Politicians are watching too, wondering as they comb their hair in the rear view mirror why they aren’t the fairest of them all. The reason? They might be dynamic, good looking, smart, savvy, but they represent none of the cultural change that Sarah Palin embodies for conservatives. They think that their smart wonkishness, or their strong soundbites will win the hearts of conservatives, but it won’t. Conservatives intuitively know that politics is merely one front in the war on our culture. Hollywood is another. Palin has shrewdly tapped both and in so doing has unprecedented ability to leverage the media to move the culture, or vice versa. Politicians might not like the fact that Sarah Palin is the only one who gets it, but it is an undeniable truth they cannot overcome.

Those who would oppose her should be very afraid.

Palin knows that culture is predictive of politics and Hollywood moves culture. Therefore, as the country revolted against Obama Progressives and shifted dramatically rightward, the one remaining liberal stronghold standing in the way of a pure conservative revolution is the puppet master of culture — Hollywood. Sarah brought scissors to the theatre and she is challenging the master. Snip, snip, snip and it is done. Palin just took a leading place on the stage, reaching both red and blue state America with her unpretentious authenticity on her way to reclaiming our culture. The culture will be restored and the socialist folly will be buried in the tombs of bad scripts where it belongs. John Wayne style Hollywood is resurging, and America is poised to once again be Reagan’s “Shining City on the Hill”—a beacon for the rest of the world.

So that is why the liberals are so concerned that Sarah is taking Hollywood. It is not President Palin they fear, but a God-fearing, family oriented, crackerjack smart, female “Puppet Master Palin” that has them trembling. If she and her conservative, apple pie eating, patriotic cohorts held the strings, libs could no longer rule the world stage from the rafters.

Somebody get Sarah some sunglasses!

WOLF: Mr. President, tear down this law : A bold move may save your presidency

December 18th, 2010 | By Gina Loudon

By Dr. Milton R. Wolf – The Washington Times

Mr. President, the centerpiece of your domestic agenda, the health care overhaul that bears your name, has just been declared unconstitutional. I celebrate this victory for freedom and for limited government, and I invite you to consider the opportunity it offers you.

To be precise, it was the individual mandate to purchase insurance that was determined to exceed the letter and spirit of the Constitution. But this ruling threatens the entire edifice of Obamacare because that mandate is the central linchpin of the Affordable Care Act. In the simplest of terms, the goodies Obamacare promises depend on the money brought in by compelling young, healthy Americans to purchase more insurance than they need. It’s a clever version of redistribution, but it’s not immune from this one simple reality: no money, no goodies.

In light of this week’s ruling and in the peculiar absence of a severability clause in your law, the courts may find legal reason to strike down the entirety of Obamacare. (After all, would Congress still have passed this massive overhaul if it didn’t have the mandate? Recall that it did so only with a razor-thin, single-vote margin. Dare to have the Congressional Budget Office re-score Obamacare now without the mandate?) But even if the courts don’t strike down the whole law for legal reasons, it should be stricken for logistical ones. Obamacare just won’t work without the mandate.

To your credit, just last week, the White House acknowledged in no uncertain terms the impending collapse of Obamacare absent the individual mandate.

If the constitutional challenge to the Affordable Care Act’s individual-responsibility requirement ultimately prevails, it would mean that provisions preventing health insurance companies from discriminating against people with pre-existing conditions also would be invalidated by the court because the two are inseparably linked. If insurance companies are required to cover those with pre-existing conditions, who are potentially more expensive to cover, without requiring everyone – both sick and healthy people – to have insurance, premiums will increase rapidly. Similarly, other provisions – including banning insurers from discriminating based on health status, age and gender – also will fall.

Of course, these seismic foundational cracks in Obamacare could not have come at a worse time for you. Last month, you took a historic shellacking, and last week, for inexplicable reasons, you created the horribly awkward visual of surrendering the presidency to Bill Clinton, if only temporarily. This was made even more puzzling considering that Mr. Clinton’s purpose was to persuade Democrats to keep President George W. Bush’s tax rates intact rather than allow them to revert to his own – theater of the bizarre. Let me guess, that press conference was his idea, but he made you think it was yours, didn’t he? Slick.

Now your presidency is spiraling out of control. Your poll numbers are dropping like the temperature at a global-warming conference. Your own party can’t discuss you without dropping the f-bomb. Your allies are forced to squelch rumors of primary challenges. Intrade Prediction Markets has even begun selling futures on whether or not you can reach the finish line of your first term.

Just as devastating, likely voters favor repeal of Obamacare almost 2-1. In truth, your allies in Congress let you down by forging such a disastrous plan. I imagine you were just as shocked as I was to learn that the Obamacare “author,” Sen. Max Baucus, Montana Democrat, admitted that even he hadn’t read the bill. America deserved better than a plan that will bankrupt insurance companies and drive doctors out of practice.

But here’s your chance to turn this ship around. You must realize that it won’t be achieved with small, timid moves. Be bold. Lead the charge to repeal Obamacare. I know this is against every instinct you have, but look where your instincts have gotten you. This is your chance to hit that reset button.

Can you make this pivot? You spent years claiming the Bush tax cuts were only for the rich and were the root of all evil, and now you’re their biggest cheerleader. Yes, you can make this pivot – and for good reason. The truth is, America has the finest health care delivery system in the world. It certainly needs reforms, and I will pledge myself in your service to achieve them.

You were wise to recognize the conservative ascendency in your recent tax-cut deal with the Republicans. Had you not dealt when you did, your terms only would have become worse. The same calculus applies to health care reform. Consider your alternatives. Dig in over the next two years and stake your legacy on Mr. Baucus’ crumbling and deeply flawed plan, and then, assuming it survives the courts, witness from the sidelines as a new president and a new Congress dismantle it. Or be bold and join those of us who champion free-market reforms and will honor the American principle of helping all those who cannot help themselves.

Mr. President, if you seek health insurance for all Americans, health insurance companies must survive. If you seek medical care for all citizens, doctors must keep their practices. If you seek prosperity, if you champion freedom, Mr. President, tear down this law.

Call Your Senators to vote NO on Repeal of DADT…

December 17th, 2010 | By Gina Loudon

Taken from The Christian Post (ChristianPost.com):

The House passed on Wednesday a bill to end the ban against gays and lesbians serving openly in the military.

This is the third time this year that DADT repeal legislation has reached the Senate. Previously, the repeal was tacked onto a Defense Authorization bill. But after failing to get passed the Senate twice, the House moved to introduce a freestanding bill.

President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates are backing a quick repeal.

Doug Carlson of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission denounced the attempt to ram through a repeal of the 1993 policy in the lame-duck session.

“This Christmas, the upper chamber is hoping to deliver another unwanted present: repeal of two centuries of military conduct policy against open homosexuals in the military,” he said. “To rush through repeal would be no welcomed Christmas present to our troops. It would be a grave disservice to our valiant servicemen and women.”

Family Research Council President and Marine Corps veteran Tony Perkins has called out Congress for sacrificing U.S. troops to a political agenda.

“By making this change, and putting it as a priority over the actual funding of the troops, Congress is choosing to use the military, not as a tool for national defense, but as an instrument of social engineering,” he said after the House vote.

Perkins rejected the House for ignoring the pleas of seasoned commanders, including Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James Amos.

A day ahead of the House vote, Amos said combat Marines are concerned that a DADT repeal may be a distraction.

“I don’t want to lose any Marines to the distraction,” he warned. “I don’t want to have any Marines that I’m visiting at Bethesda [Naval Medical Center] with no legs be the result of any type of distraction.

“Right now is a very intense period of time for a pretty healthy slice of the United States Marine Corps. This is not training. This is what I call the real deal. And the forces that wear this uniform … came back and told their commandant of the Marine Corps that they have concerns. That’s all I need. I don’t need a staff study. I don’t need to hire three PhDs to tell me [how] to interpret it… [I]f they have concerns, I do too. It’s as simple as that.”

The stand-alone bill to repeal DADT was sponsored by Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine).

What can we learn from our Dog? You will love this!

Old Drum–Taken from Wikipedia

State historical marker in Owensboro, Kentucky

Old Johnson County Courthouse and location of the trial.

Statue in front of Johnson County courthouse in Warrensburg, Missouri.

After the war he returned to Pettis County moving to Sedalia, Missouri and resumed his law practice. It was at this time in 1869 that Vest was asked to represent Burden and Old Drum in the case that would make him famous.
Vest took the case tried on September 23, 1870 in which he represented a client whose hunting dog, a foxhound named Drum (or Old Drum), had been killed by a sheep farmer. The farmer had previously announced his intentions to kill any dog found on his property; the dog’s owner was suing for damages in the amount of $50, the maximum allowed by law.
During the trial, Vest stated that he would “win the case or apologize to every dog in Missouri.” Vest’s closing argument to the jury made no reference to any of the testimony offered during the trial, and instead offered a eulogy of sorts. Vest’s “Eulogy on the Dog” is one of the most enduring passages of purple prose in American courtroom history (only a partial transcript has survived):

“Gentlemen of the jury: The best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it the most. A man’s reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him and the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog.

Gentlemen of the jury: A man’s dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master’s side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.

If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies, and when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death.”

Vest won the case (a possibly apocryphal story of the case says that the jury awarded $500 to the dog’s owner) and also won its appeal to the Missouri Supreme Court. A statue of the dog stands in front of the Warrensburg, Missouri courthouse.

Breaking News Please CALL!

December 17th, 2010 | By Gina Loudon

Dr. Gina Listeners: Please encourage your Senators to vote NOT to repeal “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” that protects our Military from discrimination, bullying, and other forms of harassment and distraction. *See article above this for more information, but use #’s below for your calls.

From Illinois Tea Party:

FYI – To give you timeframe for most of the votes that will happen in the next 48 hours. Please distribute! We stopped the Omnibus due to nonstop phone calls. If you can’t through to DC, absolutely call Congressional offices! PHONE NUMBERS & FAX LISTED BELOW

Today In Washington – It’s Laundry List Time

THE HOUSE: Convened at 9. Action is almost certain on a defense policy bill stripped of many controversial provisions, such as a repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell.” And with the Senate having given up on its omnibus spending bill, the House could vote on a short-term measure to keep the government running until February. The timing is up in the air, but it’s expected that the Senate would vote first on such a bill.

THE SENATE: Convened at 9:30 to continue debate on the New Start arms agreement with Russia. Democratic leaders are waiting for Republicans to offer amendments. The GOP says it merely wants a full debate on the accord; Democrats say Republicans are trying to sink it by running out the clock.
Reid has the power to switch from the treaty to regular legislation, and he might do that to take up a stopgap spending bill. The Senate could also work on the defense bill today if the House finishes with it.

THE WHITE HOUSE: The president will sign the tax cut bill shortly before 4. Prior to that, he’ll spend the afternoon talking to labor leaders including the AFL-CIO’s Richard Trumka, the American Federation of Teachers’ Randi Weingarten, AFSCME’s Gerald McEntee, SEIU’s Mary Kay Henry and the United Auto Workers’ Bob King.

MOVING ALONG: Senate Democrats can still push some legislative buttons while Republicans essentially slow-walk the New Start treaty. Reid filed for cloture yesterday on a stand-alone repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell” as well as the so-called Dream Act, which would provide a path to citizenship for hundreds of thousands of adult children of illegal immigrants.

Votes on those two motions are set for Saturday. “The path is clear to finishing our work relatively soon,” Reid said this morning. But he offered a caveat: “We will work every day until our work is done.”

A repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell” was hitched to the annual defense policy bill, but that measure was pared this week to its core. It would authorize $725 billion in Pentagon spending for the coming year. One controversial item did stick around: a provision that would allow the U.S. government to pay reparations to the families of Guam residents subjected to atrocities during the Japanese occupation in World War II.

Also in the Senate mix is a bill to boost health services for Sept. 11 first-responders. A few Republicans have hinted that they might support the measure once the tax and spending bills are wrapped up — and a few would be enough for passage.

OMNIBUS DOWN: Beyond all the noise about Republicans rebuffing the $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill, Congress still has to think about funding the government in the short term. The money runs out by Monday, and the Democratic leadership is scrambling to put a stopgap funding measure in place. It’ll probably be something that runs into early next year — when the GOP will have more power to tinker with fiscal decisions.

Potential speed bumps for a short-term spending bill, or CR, include the pressure to adorn it with non-appropriations legislation, such as a food safety bill that is a priority of many Democrats. Most CRs continue to fund programs at current levels, but Congress will write in exceptions, including some pitched by the White House. Obama could ask, for example, for more money for Defense Department programs. And if any of those exceptions include Democratic spending priorities, Republicans could balk.

Vote is expected Saturday morning

Make or Break DREAM Act

http://immigrationactionreport.blogspot.com/2010/12/make-or-break-dream-act.html

MAKE OR BREAK
The next 24 hours will be the most important opportunity for grassroots activists to STOP the DREAM Act amnesty from passing in Congress. The DREAM Act is an amnesty for 2.1 million undocumented young adults in this country. Vote is set for 10am in the Senate on Saturday, December 18, 2010. We only have one chance to stop this!
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has filed a cloture motion (to start/stop debate) on the House amendment to the Senate amendments to H.R. 5281, the DREAM Act, setting up a cloture vote on the measure for Saturday morning, December 18, 2010. There will be 2 possible votes, but the first vote is the most important!
60 votes are needed to pass first vote – then only 51 votes to pass second vote and if it wins, the DREAM Act will go to the President to become law.
STEP 1
First things first! Let’s follow the lead of our friends at ALIPAC.
Everyone call Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY). McConnell is the minority leader of the Senate. Call and explain your version of…
“I’m calling to tell Senator McConnell that every single Republican in the Senate had better vote NO ON CLOTURE for the Dream Amnesty tomorrow. We need all 42 GOP to vote NO. I am going to hold Senator McConnell, as minority leader, personally responsible for keeping Republicans together in opposition to this terrible Dream Act AMNESTY bill that would allow Obama and Homeland Security to give Amnesty to any and all illegal aliens according to the ‘waiver’ on page 5 line 21. Please let Senator McConnell know that Americans are counting on him to assure all GOP Senators vote NO on DREAM Act AMNESTY CLOTURE”
Call his DC office (202) 224-2541 and his Louisville office (502) 582-6304
Email Senator McConnell at http://www.mcconnell.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?p=ContactForm
STEP 2
After calling the minority leader’s office, let’s all fall in formation behind the targets chosen by our friends at NumbersUSA. Please select from our suggested talking points and then call each and every Senator listed below. If you call through the list once, start at the beginning and call again! By calling using these suggestions from NumbersUSA we can concentrate our impact.

Call to say / or leave a message
“Vote NO on Cloture for the DREAM Act. Please vote NO tomorrow on the DREAM Act.”
“Please ask Senator _______ to vote NO ON CLOTURE ON THE DREAM AMNESTY BILL and tell Harry Reid that America wants Congress to come home for Christmas and end the lame duck!”
“Please ask Senator _____ to vote NO ON DREAM AMNESTY CLOTURE because HR5281 on page 5 line 21 allows Obama and Homeland Security to waive all requirements and grant amnesty to almost all illegal aliens in America.”

“Please vote NO ON CLOTURE FOR 5281 AMNESTY BILL because this bill will displace and replace millions of innocent American workers, students, and voters.”

TOP PRIORITY

Encourage These 12 Senators To Stick With Leanings or Pledges To Vote NO

This is the group that we HAVE to win. Fortunately, they are all leaning toward voting NO and their staff may even be saying they probably will vote NO. But our allies in the Senate don’t feel absolutely sure of these votes. The dozen Senators are under enormous lobbying pressure intended to make them feel inhumane if they vote NO.

Give them quick phone calls to thank them for their intention to vote NO on the DREAM Act amnesty. And note that a key reason they are right is that DREAM provides zero enforcement to stop future millions of illegal workers from coming and taking jobs from hard-pressed Americans.

2nd PRIORITY
Pound These 3 Senators Up For Re-Election in 2012 Who Are Leaning YES on Amnesty

There is no logical political reason for these Senators to vote YES on amnesty . . . if the people of their states know what they are doing. All three of these have good tendencies in our direction on amnesty in the past. But they are acting like this amnesty is somehow different.

Your job with these Senators is to persuade their staffs that voting for an amnesty without any enforcement will definitely be a key issue in the 2012 elections during what all experts predict will be continuing high unemployment for U.S. workers.

All three of these are Democrats in states that swung heavily Republican in last month’s elections. A vote for amnesty might look like political suicide.

These 3 Senators Do NOT Face 2012 Re-Election But Are On The Fence And Leaning YES

All three of these have voted with us against amnesty in the past.

Tell their staffs that you don’t understand how the Senator could oppose “comprehensive immigration reform” in the past when amnesty and enforcement were wrapped together, but now they are willing to pass an amnesty with NO enforcement.

These 6 Senators Lean Strongly YES On Amnesty But Will Have To Face Voters In 2012

Most of these Democrats have had very little interest in hearing from us in the past.

But after last month’s cataclysmic results, these Senators find themselves in states where they could have a really competitive race in 2012. Thanks to all of you who phoned them today. Now, we need another round of calls telling them how much an amnesty vote Saturday will be like an albatross around their necks during the 2012 campaigns.

Fear Factor: Sarah Palin and 2012

November 20th, 2010 | By Gina Loudon

Recently, I attended the Conservatives for Palin, and I gained some insight I think conservatives want to consider moving forward. The group was not like any I have ever known. There were all kinds of people there—Christians, Jews, Hindus, women, men, black, white, Asian, and even Nordic! They were gay, straight, old, young, republican, democrat, libertarian, and independent, and they all had one thing in common…they believe the stringent adherence to the US Constitution is the answer to the problems we have today.

Even if they are quiet, there are those conservatives who struggle with a female president. Dr. Dathan Paterno, noted psychologist and author says the reality is, that there WILL be a woman president in the near future—that it is in the American psyche. What happens if conservatives choose NOT to nominate Sarah Palin? Certainly the liberals will nominate a woman soon, and then they continue the whining about sexism that has worked for them for so long.

Liberals and establishment politicians of all parties seem to have a special venom for the former Governor of Alaska. If she is really so “unelectable” then why all the fuss? “Thou doth protest…”. If she is really so laughable, then why do the jokes about her keep falling flat? Could it be that they obsess about her for the psychological reason that they can’t stand the threat she poses to them? Could it be because they see her as the greatest threat in recent history to their personal goals, and the establishment media and messaging they have used to control politics in this country for a generation? Could it be that the nomination of Sarah Palin for President is a revolution?

Her nomination presents a real conundrum for liberals and establishment parties of all stripes. If the Republicans nominate Sarah Palin, how will the liberals continue to accuse the right of being sexist? Where will the feminists go to find their beloved glass ceiling victim status? If she has outspoken gay supporters who don’t disagree with her stance that this is a Judeo Christian republic with a founding document that matters more than someone’s sexual preference, then how will the militant gays continue to relegate Christians to radical, homophobic, hating extremists? If a family woman, a mom, can (based on her Christian principle) in fact love someone that the liberals say she hates, then what do liberals do with that? If the constitutional conservatives progress this nation to nominate the first female nominee for president, then how do liberals continue to abuse labels like “progressive” and “tolerant”?

Conservatives have their own issues. First, from a GOP perspective, consultants use their experience with the apparatus to be hired by candidates to run their campaigns. How will they do that if someone climbed to the top on a different tree? Some conservatives may struggle with her rebuke of legalistic philosophy in lieu of one that favors real liberty, and Christ-like love, even for those who live or believe differently than you. Perhaps most difficult for some conservatives to admit–When a woman like Sarah Palin is President, how to we reconcile our own sideline behavior without tremendous guilt? I wish I had a good answer to that last one.

The militant liberals don’t like her, but interestingly she has attracted a broad group of people who do like her. Their loyalty has resulted in an organization that is so talented and proficient, it is difficult to comprehend, even to a seasoned campaign veteran. Her supporters are constitution loving, focused and very, very serious about supporting her (or whomever she taps with her magic winning wand)! Not everyone at the Conservatives for Palin were certain she would run, or that she should, but almost all that I talked to agreed that if she did run, the Country would be shocked at her savvy and self deprecating ability to do so. They all agreed that she is far stronger, far more capable than any of her opponents even know. She is certainly well vetted, beyond that of any other candidate. Most people would agree that no other candidate has endured the ridicule and jabs that Sarah has overcome.

Her critics say she does all she does for money, but with two books and a television show, that argument doesn’t hold any more water than the fame argument, or the power hound. She just won 71%+ of the elections she touched, and many were considered “unwinnable.” She has become a culture icon of sorts. She could take her lipstick, shoes, glasses, mama grizzly, and even barracuda labels, and she could probably start a fashion line and retire to an Alaskan island with a lovely view of Russia.

The liberals have always underestimated Governor Palin and she has continued to shock them as she seamlessly wins elections like a political Houdini of sorts.

All of the accusations about her motives tend to leave the listening public with one logical conclusion: She must be in this because she believes in what she is doing, and genuinely cares about this Country. That is not a half bad motive by most peoples’ standards, and it is hard to argue otherwise and sound rational.

If Sarah Palin runs and wins, it will certainly be a political analyst’s dream to observe. Fear is not a factor for the Palins, and they seem to enjoy the challenge of overcoming all the predictions about their family. They might just shock us again in the weeks to come–and the ones after that.
